Summer School / Fifth Quarter 2026
Middle School
When & Where?
- Dates: Monday, July 13 - Friday, August 7th
- Times: M - F, 8AM - 11AM
- Location: Medford High School: 489 Winthrop St, Medford, MA 02155
What is Fifth Quarter?
This 4-week summer program is designed to support students who would benefit from additional structures and supports to help them build academic skills. Students will receive daily instruction in Math and ELA from teachers as well as support from counselors to develop Executive Functioning and SEL skills, daily movement breaks outdoors, and reflection routines to help students monitor their own progress.
Who Attends Fifth Quarter?
This program is designed for students whose school year performance indicates that they would benefit from additional time and support to build ELA, Math, and/or overall academic skills.
What are the Goals of Fifth Quarter?
- Improve literacy, math, and academic skills
- Support development of Social Emotional and Executive Functioning skills
Course Credit
All courses are equivalent to a full-course credit during the regular school year.
Daily Schedule Overview:
8:00-8:30: Breakfast
8:30-9:30: ELA or Math
9:30-9:50: Movement Break Outdoors
9:50-10:50: ELA or Math
10:50-11:00: Reflection Routines & Awards
Attendance & Behavior
Students are expected to be on time and attend class daily. All absences should be communicated to the Summer School Director for approval. Students are also expected to adhere to the Student Handbook. Students may be removed from the program for failure to adhere to expectations.
Registration
Registration is completely FREE OF COST to Medford High School students who meet the qualifying criteria.
- In-Person Early Registration is available between Monday 6/15- 7/10
- Locations / Times: Main Office at Andrews & McGlynn Middle Schools. Monday through Friday, 8:00am-3:00 pm. Bring completed registration form on page 2 of the Middle School Fifth Quarter Fact Sheet (forms are also available in each school office)

- Students may also register on Monday 7/13 between 7:00-8:00 am in the Medford High School lobby.

The Student Handbook contains information about summer school 2026 policies. Students and families must read & sign the Student Handbook Understanding form as a condition of enrolling in summer school.

High School
Basic Information:

What is Fifth Quarter?
This 4-week, 20 day summer program is cost-free and designed to help students recover credit for core classes in which they have earned an E during the previous school year.

Criteria for Credit Recovery
- Earn a 70 or higher in Fifth Quarter Classes
- Attend ALL classes. Students with more than 3 absences will not receive credit.
- Arrive in class on time daily. Three tardies to a class will be counted as an absence
- Follow the Student Handbook and all rules & expectations of Summer School. Failure to adhere to expectations will result in removal from Fifth Quarter.
