Level One – Beginner
Level One swimmers are beginners who may have little to no swimming experience. If your child hasn’t swam before on their own (with you or other adults out of the water) or is not strong enough to do so yet then Level One is where you should start.
The focus will be getting the student comfortable with the water and some of the fundamental elements of more refined swimming. Students will learn to kick on their stomach and backs as well as how to properly use their arms during swimming.
Level Two – Basic Swimming
A Level Two student should be able to swim independently without any aid. Students should also possess enough endurance while swimming to remain active and participate without issue for roughly 40 minutes.
All students must be able to consistently demonstrate at least the following skills
· Float on their back with their face and stomach out of the water.
· Put their face in the water while swimming.
· Propel themselves forward without support or aid on their back (Backstroke).
· Swim on their front, with the aid of a kickboard, while kicking.
· Enter and exit the water without assistance or the use of the ladder.
Level Three – Proficient Swimmer
A Level Three student should be able to accomplish all of the level two skills, swim freestyle and backstroke (arm and leg motion) unaided and be able to swim in deep water (12 ft.) comfortably. They should also be able to consistently demonstrate the following skills:
· Breathing to the side during freestyle.
· Turn in the water without aid or standing.
· Enter and exit deep water without assistance.
A Level Three student will be introduced to breaststroke as well as the basics of diving during the class. Students should feel comfortable in the deep water for an extended period of time and willing to work on the more technical aspects of their stroke.
Level Four – Advanced Swimming
A Level Four student should be able to accomplish all of the level three skills. In addition, a level four student should have a basic understanding of breaststroke (feet and arm motions), basic understanding of diving, and a good endurance level in regard to swimming. They should be able to demonstrate the following skills consistently:
· Rotary Breathing during freestyle.
· Able to jump and dive into deep water (12 ft.).
Level four is focused on fine-tuning and improving the technical elements of a student’s strokes to better prepare them for competitive swimming in the future.
Upon registering for your first swim lessons at the Medford High School Pool, your child must be level tested to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate level class. Level testing takes place during the listed dates. This policy stands even if the child has previously taken lessons at another facility. If your child has never taken lessons before or is still a beginner, you may register them for level 1 without taking a level test.
When registering your child for a subsequent session, place them in the same level they were previously in, unless the instructor tells you that they have moved into a different level. The instructors will continually evaluate swimming students and will move them into a different level if necessary. Swim instructors reserve the right to move a child into a different level at any point during the session.
REGISTRATION WILL TAKE PLACE ONLY ON THE LISTED DATES AT THE MHS POOL.
